How Deskspace uses AI
For students, parents and teachers: which AI we use, what it sees, and how we keep it honest, safe and on-task.

The AI behind Deskspace
Deskspace uses Claude, made by Anthropic. Quick jobs (like flashcards) use a fast, lighter model; marking, exams and detailed feedback use stronger ones. Every request goes through our server — your browser never talks to the AI directly.
What the AI sees
- What you asked for, and the tool's settings (topic, difficulty, length…).
- Your year level, subject and learning preferences, so it pitches answers right.
- Relevant excerpts from your uploads, if you choose to use them — clearly marked as reference material.
- For chats, the conversation so far. For marking, the question and your answer.
What it doesn't see
- Your name, email, date of birth, school name or payment details.
- Other students' work, or anything from study groups.
Under Anthropic's commercial terms, what we send isn't used to train its models. Read more in the privacy policy.
Built-in safeguards
- Wellbeing first. Before any AI runs, Deskspace checks for signs of distress. If it finds them, it responds with care and points to Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800), Lifeline (13 11 14) and headspace — and doesn't count it as an AI request.
- Honesty. The AI is told never to invent quotes, citations, cases, statistics or page numbers, and to say when it's unsure.
- Age-appropriate and on-task. Instructions keep answers suitable for school students and focused on study. Each subject's AI sticks to that subject: ask it about something unrelated and it suggests things it can help with instead.
- Grounded in your materials. When you upload slides or readings, answers draw on them and show which file and page they came from.
Academic integrity
- Assessment mode (per subject): for graded work, writing tools switch to coaching — plans, feedback and questions — instead of text you could hand in.
- Model answers and drafts are labelled as study material.
- Every AI request is recorded in your AI use log, with a draft declaration for schools and unis that ask for one.
- Students must follow their school or university's rules on AI. We remind them when they sign up.
When it gets things wrong
AI can make mistakes. Every output has a Report button: reports go to us, and we use them to improve Deskspace's instructions. Check important facts against your notes, textbook or teacher.
Limits and costs
Each plan includes a number of AI requests per day, and a short-term limit stops runaway use. If the AI service is busy and nothing is produced, the request isn't counted.
